What Is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy (or cryosurgery) eliminates cancer cells by freezing them. Currently, this procedure is done on both prostate glands and for small kidney tumors. Both procedures utilize ultrasound to guide the insertion of thin needles which produce “ice balls” of extreme sub-zero temperatures.

How Long Will The Procedure Take?

Your cryotherapy treatment will be done at a hospital. The hospital and/or your urologist will inform you of the time to arrive, etc. This procedure is done in the operating room. You will be asleep during the procedure which will last between one to two and a half hours. After the procedure is done, you will be taken to the Recovery Room where you will wake up and be watched. Most patients with prostate cryotherapy can be done on an outpatient basis but your urologist will determine if an overnight hospital stay is necessary. All patient having cryotherapy for kidney tumors will be admitted to the hospital for a two to three day stay.

How Much Recovery Is Necessary?

All patients are different and there will be some discomfort after your procedure. Your physician will order pain medication for you. However, most patients recover quickly to their normal lifestyles since this procedure is minimally invasive. It is best to discuss any and all concerns with your urologist.
