Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is the nonmalignant, uncontrolled growth of cells in the prostate gland. Over time, the gland constricts the urethra, the tube through which urine flows, and obstructs urine outflow. Because the bladder can no longer empty completely, infections, bladder stones and chronic prostatitis may occur. It is estimated that BPH, the cause of which is unknown, afflicts at least 50% of men over age 60. For patients seeking help for BPH causing urinary obstruction, treatment with a revolutionary minimally-invasive laser technique called GreenLight PVPTM, is available through AKSM. What is GreenLight PVPTM? GreenLight PVPTM is a laser procedure for the relief of urinary obstruction due to BPH. Direct laser activity is delivered to the tissue via a thin fiber inserted into the urethra through a cystoscope. The laser beam quickly vaporizes tissue and the urologist can precisely remove the obstructing prostate tissue. Natural urine flow is immediately restored, bringing relief of the urinary obstructive symptoms. Results are just as effective as those achieved through invasive surgery—the previous “gold standard” TURP—but without the inpatient hospital stay or the risk of complications such as bleeding, incontinence and impotence. With GreenLight PVPTM patients generally return home the same day. |
